Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera Speech to Supporters at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections on Friday, July 7, 2017

My Dear Family, Friends and Supporters – Good Afternoon!

I am Charlotte City Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera - representing District 5 and now officially a candidate for Charlotte City Council At-Large. I had never thought of running for a public office even in my wildest dream, but I remember hearing from many of you in this room after few months of my service on city council tackling Eastland, Independence construction and hate crimes in our city, and asking me to represent you at higher level of service.

After almost 4 months of contemplation, I have decided to serve you at a higher level of service on City Council so let me thank you from bottom of my heart for having trust and faith in my ability to serve you, your family and your neighbors and tackle serious issues facing our city – From economic opportunities to aging infrastructure to safety and trust in our community.

My family immigrated here when I was 16 with language barrier and no economic resources. While all my classmates were preparing and getting ready for prom, I was taking ESL classes and after school programs so I can communicate in English and thanks to subsidized lunch and a job for sustaining me throughout the school.

I fulfilled my dream of going to college with academic scholarships and financial aid, and become a CPA and successful entrepreneur. Because community invested in my future, but I understand that not every individual has the same opportunity that I did, especially in today’s climate with cuts to our education, health care and opportunities for our residents. It’s more important than ever we fight for equity, equality and opportunities for all.

My vision for our great city is simple: Prosperous economic environment throughout the city, good infrastructure to keep up with the growth and safety and trust in our community.

I’ll advocate for businesses to move to East and West Charlotte with the same energy as Ballantyne. We have to stop giving away taxpayers’ hard earned money to projects that don’t improve our quality of life, and start investing in our neighborhoods to address traffic, congestion and safety in our community.

I’m committed to providing a prosperous economic environment throughout the city where every individual can get home safety and efficiently, and have a voice at the decision making table.

So when historians look back 15 years from now they can say Charlotte was a prosperous, safe and inclusive city for all. We’re in this together!

Thank you and God Bless America!
